Robe of Honour

ca. 19th century
Government Museum and Art Gallery, Chandigarh

Depiction of Guru Nanak in a classical pose of contemplation. The robe that the Guru wears is illustrated with calligraphy in the Arabic naskhi script with verses of the Koran. The sleeves and a part of the hem of the robe contain the Guru's own composition Japji Sahib. The artist may have been inspired by the robe Guru Nanak is said to have received with verses of the Koran as a gift from the Caliph of Baghdad during his fourth great journey (1517-1522) to the West where he visited Baghdad, Mecca and Medina. That robe is preserved at Gurdwara Dera Baba Nanak in Punjab.
