Hukamnamas
Hukamnamas originated as the written orders of the Guru. As the early Sikh community began to grow from the time of Guru Nanak and spread to various parts of South Asia, personal daily contact with the Guru was not always possible. To manage an ever growing community the Sikh Gurus would send letters of authority to various Sikh congregations dealing with administrative tasks, conferring blessings or authorizing local representatives of the community to act on their behalf.
